Szanowni Państwo,
W imieniu Dziekana Wydziału MiNI PW chcielibyśmy zaprosić Wszystkich zainteresowanych na specjalny wykład światowej sławy Profesora Noga Alona z Princeton University pt. „Vantage Points and Sign Patterns”.

Wykład odbędzie się w poniedziałek, 29 września o godz. 12.15 w sali 101 w Gmachu Matematyki.

Profesor Noga Alon jest matematykiem specjalizującym się w kombinatoryce, teorii grafów oraz ich zastosowaniom w informatyce teoretycznej. Jest laureatem m.in. Nagroda Gödla (w 2005 r.), Nagrody Knutha (w 2022 r.) czy Nagrody Shawa (w 2022 r.). Jest autorem ponad 600 artykułów oraz wspólnie z Joelem Spencerem, książki „The probabilistic method”, której obaj autorzy otrzymali Nagrody Steele’a za wykład matematyczny.

Abstract:
Motivated by a possible application in Social Choice, I will discuss a recent work with Defant, Kravitz, and Zhu that studies the number of ways to order points in the plane or in higher dimensions according to the sum of their Euclidean distances from chosen vantage points.

A crucial mathematical tool here is an extension of the results of Milnor and Warren about sign patterns of real polynomials, which
have been used in the study of problems in Discrete Mathematics
and theoretical Computer Science, to a version that deals with sign patterns of more general functions.
